School Resource Officer
The School Resource Deputy (SRD) program is offered in cooperation with Franklin County Public Schools. The Office of the Sheriff has three (3) assigned SRD’s for the Franklin County High School, two (2) assigned to Benjamin Franklin Middle School (including the Gereau Center), and ten (10) that are assigned amongst the ten elementary schools. SRD’s provide classroom instruction on law enforcement topics and the Virginia Rules Program, an expansion of the Class Action program offered from the Virginia Attorney General’s Office. SRD’s hold classroom presentations in all schools, conduct classroom observations and special events at the schools, and holds conferences with students, staff and parents.
We are proud to partner with our local public school system with presentation of the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program since the 2024-2025 school year. This program is typically aimed for students in elementary, middle and high school – but with primary focus on 5th and 6th graders, usually between the ages of 10 and 12. Topics focus on drug prevention, decision-making skills, and resisting peer pressure. For older students, topics can also include substance abuse, mental health, bullying and social media safety.
