What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic Violence is defined as a pattern of abusive, coercive behaviors or threats used to control and exert power over an intimate partner.

The Power and Control Wheel was developed by the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project in Duluth, MN. The wheel serves as a diagram of tactics that an abusive partner uses to keep their victim in a relationship.

Lethality Assessment Program (LAP)

It is the policy of the Office of the Sheriff, Franklin County, VA to use the Lethality Screen at the scene of a domestic violence incident to identify victims of domestic violence in potentially lethal situations, and follow the established criteria to place those victims in immediate and direct contact with a domestic violence service program hotline advocate. Officers administering the Lethality Screen shall ask the victim the Lethality Screen and, when a victim is assessed as being in High-Danger, call Franklin County Family Resource Center and ask the victim to speak with a hotline advocate.

Safety Plan

      • Plan for a quick escape.
      • Stay out of rooms where there are weapons.
      • Gather important documents.
      • Put aside emergency money.
      • Hide an extra set of car keys.
      • Keep an extra set of clothes with a trusted friend.
      • Take a special toy for child.
      • Talk to people you trust.
